Bait only fits the Fiberglass Rod and up. The buttons for PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and mobile, which bait to pick, and how to bait crab pots.

Bait in Stardew Valley only goes on a Fiberglass Rod or better, which Willy sells for 1,800g once you reach Fishing level 2. To use it, open your inventory, pick up the bait, and right-click the rod on PC. On a controller, select the bait with A (Cross on PlayStation), then attach it with X on Xbox, Square on PlayStation or Y on Switch. On mobile, drag the bait onto the rod. After that you just fish as normal: every cast uses one piece, and fish bite faster.

Details here come from the Stardew Valley Wiki and match version 1.6, the latest release in the wiki’s version history as of October 2026 (1.6.15 on PC).

Why won’t the bait go on my rod?

Almost every “bait won’t attach” post on the Steam forums has one of three causes. Here’s what players ran into and what solved it.

“I right-click the bait onto my bamboo pole and nothing happens”

That’s expected. In a Steam thread from a player who couldn’t bait a Bamboo Pole, a moderator and several players gave the same answer: the starter rods have no bait slot, and you need the Fiberglass Rod. The wiki agrees, listing “ability to use bait” as the Fiberglass Rod’s upgrade over the Bamboo Pole, and the Training Rod is no better.

“I clicked the bait and then the rod, but it still isn’t attached”

The order of clicks matters on PC. In another Steam discussion, the reply was to left-click the bait to pick it up, then right-click the rod, and noted that only Fiberglass and better rods have a bait slot. The poster still had trouble afterwards and the thread never confirmed why, so if you’re sure you’re using right-click, check that the rod really is a Fiberglass, Iridium or Advanced Iridium Rod.

“My Mac trackpad has no right-click”

A Mac player in a Steam thread about baiting a fiberglass rod hit exactly this. Suggestions were to bind the eat action to a keyboard key and press it while holding the bait over the rod, or to plug in a mouse. The poster said the keyboard idea didn’t work for them, so a mouse is the safer bet.

“Do I really have to re-bait after every fish?”

No. A Steam thread asking for an auto-bait button got a quick fix: grab the whole stack of bait and right-click it onto the rod, and the full stack sits in the slot. The game warns you with “You’ve used your last piece of bait” when it runs out (wiki).

Which rods can use bait?

Three rods take bait, and the cheapest one is all most players need for a long time. Prices and levels below come from the wiki’s Fish Shop page.

Rod Price at Willy’s Fishing level needed Takes bait?
Training Rod 25g None No
Bamboo Pole 500g None No
Fiberglass Rod 1,800g 2 Yes (no tackle)
Iridium Rod 7,500g 6 Yes
Advanced Iridium Rod 25,000g Earned via the Mastery Cave first Yes

Willy’s shop is open 9am to 5pm and doesn’t sell anything on Saturdays unless it’s raining, so plan the trip.

How to put bait on a fishing rod in Stardew Valley

The steps are the same everywhere; only the buttons change. Open your inventory, select the bait, then use the “attach” button on the rod.

Platform Attach bait Remove bait
PC (mouse) Left-click the bait (or right-click to take just some), then right-click the rod Right-click the rod
Xbox controller A on the bait to grab the stack, then X on the rod Not listed separately by the wiki
PlayStation controller Cross on the bait, then Square on the rod Cross
Nintendo Switch A on the bait, then Y on the rod Y
Android and iPhone Drag the bait and drop it on the rod Can’t remove; swap in a different bait instead

On a controller, pressing X (Xbox), Square (PlayStation) or Y (Switch) on the bait picks up a single piece instead of the stack, per the Bait page. Grab the whole stack so you’re not back in the menu every few casts.

A mobile quirk worth knowing: the wiki notes that switching bait on a rod can sometimes cut the stack down to one, and a big stack can occasionally vanish after a few casts. Keep spare bait in your inventory on mobile.

Where to get bait

Regular Bait costs 5g at Willy’s once you’re Fishing level 2, and you learn the crafting recipe at the same level: one Bug Meat per craft. If you have Bug Meat piling up, crafting saves a little money; otherwise buying a stack costs very little. Deluxe Bait is 100g at Willy’s from Fishing level 4, or craft it from 5 Bait and 2 Moss.

Which bait should you use?

Plain Bait halves the wait for a bite and cuts down trash, which covers most fishing. Use the others for specific jobs. All figures are from the wiki’s Bait page.

Bait What it does How to get it
Bait Nibble delay cut by 50%, less trash 5g, or craft from 1 Bug Meat (Fishing 2)
Deluxe Bait Nibble delay cut by 67%, plus a slightly bigger fishing bar 100g, or craft from 5 Bait and 2 Moss (Fishing 4)
Wild Bait Nibble delay cut by 62.5%, chance of two fish at once Recipe from Linus’s 4-heart event
Magic Bait Ignores season, time and weather, so any fish from that water can bite Recipe from Qi’s Walnut Room; 1 Radioactive Ore and 3 Bug Meat
Targeted Bait Raises the odds of one named fish (it still has to be catchable there and then) Willy’s (100g, limited daily stock that changes with the season) or the Bait Maker
Challenge Bait Perfect catch gives three fish; the fish escapes after leaving the bar three times Recipe after claiming Fishing Mastery
Magnet Treasure chance up from 15% to 30% 1,000g at Fishing 9, or craft from 1 Iron Bar

Magic Bait is the one people overlook. It’s how you catch an out-of-season fish for a bundle without waiting a whole year, and it works on any rod that takes bait.

The Bait Maker, added in 1.6, turns any fish into 5 to 10 Targeted Bait for that species in 10 minutes. Craft it at Fishing level 6 with 3 Iron Bars, 3 Coral and 1 Sea Urchin. It’s the best way to farm a specific fish you’re hunting for perfection or a Fish Pond.

How to use bait in crab pots

Crab Pots need fresh bait every day, and an empty pot catches nothing unless you have the Luremaster profession (wiki). Place the pot, then hold bait and use it on the pot. Any bait works; Deluxe Bait raises catches to silver quality and lowers junk, and Wild Bait adds a chance of a double catch, as long as you don’t have the Mariner profession.

Loading a row of pots is quicker if you keep the button held. In a Steam thread where pots kept getting picked up instead of baited, players suggested holding a bait stack, pressing and holding on the first pot, and running along the line so each one fills. A separate Steam suggestion points out there’s no obvious sign of which pots are still empty, so go down the row in the same order every day.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use bait with the Bamboo Pole?

No. The Bamboo Pole and Training Rod have no bait slot. You need the Fiberglass Rod (1,800g at Willy’s, Fishing level 2) or an Iridium Rod.

Does bait get used up every cast in Stardew Valley?

Yes, each cast uses one piece. A rod with the Preserving enchantment gives each nibble a 50% chance of not using the bait.

Can the Fiberglass Rod hold bait and tackle?

It holds bait only. For tackle such as a Trap Bobber or Cork Bobber, you need to move up to the Iridium Rod.

Do you need bait to catch fish?

No. Every rod catches fish without it; bait just makes fish bite sooner. Crab Pots are different and need bait daily unless you’re a Luremaster.

Does bait affect which fish you catch?

Plain Bait doesn’t, it only speeds up bites and cuts trash. Targeted Bait raises the odds of one species, and Magic Bait ignores season, time and weather.
