The working Mirror of Loss in BG3 is in Act 3, at the far western end of the Chamber of Loss inside the Cloister of Sombre Embrace, the Sharran temple under the House of Grief in Baldur’s Gate (X: -474, Y: -1650). Each party member can offer memories to it for a permanent +2 to one ability score and sometimes +1 Charisma, at the cost of a -2 penalty until your next long rest. The mirror you find in Act 2’s Gauntlet of Shar is cracked and does nothing.
Spoiler note: the sections below mention Shadowheart’s Act 3 story and the choices that shape it.
The rolls behind the mirror are hidden, which is why so many players walk away with a useless memory and a curse. The order you do things in matters more than luck.
What players ask about the Mirror of Loss
Players have been comparing notes on the bg3.wiki discussion page for the Mirror of Loss since late 2023. These are the questions that keep coming up there.
“Can I get both the +1 Charisma and the +2 stat?”
Yes, but only in the right order. A February 2025 thread on that page explains that the mirror stops taking memories once you receive a +2 memory. So you fish for Patriar’s Memory (+1 Charisma) by offering memories first, then say the prayer to go for the +2. The main Mirror of Loss page confirms that order.
“Does the Mapping of the Heart help?”
It does. One comment on the talk page notes that finishing the full Mapping of the Heart questioning gives Advantage on the Religion check for the prayer, and the main wiki page lists the same bonus. The mapping is the 1000-gold service Mirie offers at the House of Grief’s front desk, per the House of Grief page.
“Is Reliable Talent enough to guarantee the checks?”
Not reliably. A reply in the talk page’s update thread suggested an 11th-level Rogue’s Reliable Talent makes Advantage unnecessary. But the main page documents a dialogue bug: characters roll these checks against themselves, and with Karmic Dice turned on that can force a failure that overrides Reliable Talent. The safer move is to switch Karmic Dice off in the game options before you start.
“Can a Selûnite Shadowheart use the mirror?”
Usually not. Players testing several saves in a March 2026 thread found that freeing Shadowheart’s parents led to a message that she had already surrendered most of her memories, while saves where Nightsong or her parents were killed or ignored still allowed the +2. That lines up with the wiki: Shadowheart only benefits if she’s still loyal to Shar, or if she visits the mirror before speaking to her parents.
Where is the Mirror of Loss in BG3?
It’s in the Chamber of Loss, the deepest part of the Cloister of Sombre Embrace, in Act 3. Getting there takes three steps.
- Go to the House of Grief. It’s in the Steeps, in the far corner of the Lower City, across a stream. Cross the bridge between Elerrathin’s Home and Lady Jannath’s Estate to reach its porch.
- Get into the Mapping Room. Pay Mirie 1000 gold for a Mapping of the Heart and she leads you there. You can also pick the double doors (DC 15 Sleight of Hand) or use the Grief Key that Mirie or the guard Morann carries.
- Open the secret passage. A passive DC 20 Investigation check near the wall across from the stone bench reveals a button. With Shadowheart in the party, the Cloister page says you skip that check.
Inside the cloister, the Threshold of Loss door stands between you and the mirror. It opens by itself if Shadowheart is loyal to Shar. Otherwise you have three options:
- pass a DC 30 Sleight of Hand check;
- cast Knock on the door;
- place items worth 1000 gp on the altar in front of Shar’s statue, then light the Pyre of Loss on top (a Black Diamond is already sitting there).
Knock is the cheapest option if anyone in the party has it. Feeding the altar costs you real loot.
How the Mirror of Loss works
You surrender memories one at a time, and each offering is a hidden dice roll. Here’s the flow from the bg3.wiki page:
- Recognise the mirror. One party member needs to pass Religion DC 20 or Arcana DC 25 to understand what it is. Reading the Hastily Written Note in the Night Orchid Cave skips this; reaching it takes a passive DC 15 Perception check to spot a breakable wall, or you can fly over the wall.
- Offer a memory. Each character can give up to six, one tied to each ability. Every offering puts Stolen Vigour on you: -2 to that ability until a long rest, or until Remove Curse or Greater Restoration clears it.
- Say the prayer. This is a Religion check at DC 25, and you only get one try per character. Passing adds +3 to every later hidden roll, which is what makes the +2 rewards possible. Failing locks that character out of the +2 for good.
Prayer modifiers matter. A Dark Justiciar or anyone who completed the Mapping of the Heart rolls with Advantage. A character who openly follows Selûne rolls with Disadvantage, though a Selûnite in disguise takes no penalty.
Mirror of Loss rewards and odds
After a successful prayer, each hidden roll lands between 3 and 7. A 3 (20%) is a useless memory, a 4 (20%) is Patriar’s Memory, and 5 to 7 (60%) is a +2 to the ability of your choice.
| Memory | Permanent bonus |
|---|---|
| Patriar’s Memory | +1 Charisma |
| General’s Memory | +2 Strength |
| Thief’s Memory | +2 Dexterity |
| Barbarian’s Memory | +2 Constitution |
| Wizard’s Memory | +2 Intelligence |
| Mother-Superior’s Memory | +2 Wisdom |
| Bard’s Memory | +2 Charisma |
The +2 can push a score up to 24. Without the prayer, the hidden roll tops out too low for any +2, so the best you can hope for is Patriar’s Memory.
The best order for each character
Offer three memories before you pray, then pray, then keep offering. The wiki’s odds table puts this at a 55% chance of getting both rewards and a 93.6% chance of at least the +2. Praying immediately gives you a 75% chance of only the +2, because the first good roll ends the mirror for that character.
- If Patriar’s Memory shows up during your first three offerings, pray right away and use the remaining memories on the +2.
- Long rest afterwards to clear the -2 penalties, or use Greater Restoration if you need to fight first.
- Hirelings can use the mirror too, not just your main companions.
- Skip the Deception DC 20 option. Passing it lets you keep a memory but gives you nothing, and failing still costs one.
There’s one shortcut: if you picked up Forbidden Knowledge from the Necromancy of Thay, you can surrender it for a guaranteed +2 with no Religion check and no curse. The trade-off is that the book stops opening and you lose Danse Macabre if you learned it.
Shadowheart and the Mirror of Loss
Her result depends on where her story has gone. If she stays loyal to Shar (she becomes a Dark Justiciar, overthrows Viconia and kills her parents), she gets a free +2 to any ability with no curse, though Patriar’s Memory isn’t available to her. If she has turned from Shar, the mirror tells her she’s already given up most of her memories and she gets nothing. The workaround is timing: take her to the mirror before she speaks to her parents and she still counts as loyal, even if she rejects Shar afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
Is the mirror in the Gauntlet of Shar the Mirror of Loss?
It’s a Mirror of Loss, but it’s cracked and can’t be used. The working one is in the Cloister of Sombre Embrace under the House of Grief in Act 3.
Can every party member use the Mirror of Loss?
Yes. Each companion and hireling uses it separately, gets their own prayer check and can offer up to six memories.
Does the Mirror of Loss still work after Viconia is dead?
The wiki pages consulted don’t say either way. To be safe, visit the mirror while you’re in the cloister, before you finish Shadowheart’s quest there.
Is the Mirror of Loss bonus permanent?
Yes. The +2 and the +1 Charisma are permanent. Only the -2 Stolen Vigour penalty wears off, at your next long rest.
Does the +2 work in Wild Shape?
Yes. The bg3.wiki page notes the bonus carries over to a Druid’s Wild Shape forms.
