Most Vizio TVs that shut off on their own are following a timer, CEC or a stray remote signal. Here is how to find which one, and when it is really the power board.

A Vizio TV that keeps turning off by itself is usually obeying a setting or another device, not failing. The three usual suspects are the Auto Power Off timer (it shuts the TV down after 10 minutes with no video or audio signal), a Sleep Timer someone left on, and CEC, which lets a connected streaming stick, console or soundbar switch the TV off with it. Check Menu > Timers and Menu > System > CEC first, then try a different HDMI port and pull the batteries from any Fire TV remote nearby. Only if none of that helps is a failing power board likely.

What Vizio owners keep running into

“It shuts off a few times every evening, and the Vizio logo stays lit”

That’s the exact complaint in a long iFixit Answers thread about a Vizio that turns off randomly. The owner swapped the power supply board for an identical one and nothing changed. The answer that got marked as the solution was surprising: a Fire TV Stick remote was sending infrared signals that toggled the TV’s power. Covering the TV’s IR sensor, or moving the remote out of its line of sight, stopped it, and several later replies said the same trick worked for them. Vizio’s manual doesn’t cover this one; it’s purely owner experience, but it costs nothing to test.

“The logo comes up, vanishes after a few seconds, and the TV goes dark over and over”

A second iFixit thread about a Vizio that cycles on and off all day has owners of several models (D24f-F1, D32hn, D40f-E1 and a 70-inch E-Series among them) describing this loop. The accepted fix was again a Fire Stick remote: taking its batteries out ended the cycling. Other people in that thread fixed it by moving the streaming device to a different HDMI port, doing a factory reset, or replacing a power strip that kept cutting in and out.

“I turned CEC off and it still happens”

Mixed reports here. In the first iFixit thread, one person said disabling CEC solved it and another said their TV kept shutting off anyway. A third said picking the ARC option in the CEC settings helped. So treat CEC as one test on the list, not a guaranteed cure.

“Will switching from Eco Mode to Quick Start help?”

Two later answers in the same iFixit discussion said moving the TV from Eco Mode to Quick Start Mode stopped their random shutoffs. Vizio doesn’t list this as a fix, and Quick Start uses more standby power, so try it after the free checks below.

Why does my Vizio TV keep turning off by itself?

Almost always because something told it to. Here are the causes in the order worth checking, with the setting or test for each.

Cause Telltale sign What to do
Auto Power Off The TV turns off about 10 minutes after the picture goes black or the source goes idle Set Menu > Timers > Auto Power Off to Off
Sleep Timer It turns off at a regular interval after you switch it on (30 to 180 minutes) Set Menu > Timers > Sleep Timer to Off
CEC from another device The TV goes off when your console, streamer or soundbar sleeps Disable Menu > System > CEC as a test
Stray remote signal Random off/on at odd moments, often with a Fire TV Stick connected Remove the other remote’s batteries or block its line of sight
Bad HDMI cable or port Only happens on one input Swap the cable or move the device to another HDMI port
Flaky power Shutoffs line up with other things flickering, or the TV is on a power strip Plug the TV straight into a wall outlet
Heat Happens on hot days or inside a closed cabinet Clear the vents and give the set airflow
Failing power board None of the above helps and the problem gets worse over time Contact Vizio support or a TV repair shop

Turn off the two timers first

These take a minute and explain a lot of “random” shutoffs. Vizio’s D-Series user manual puts both under the Timers menu:

  1. Press Menu on the Vizio remote.
  2. Open Timers.
  3. Highlight Sleep Timer and use the left/right arrows to set it to Off. The other choices are 30, 60, 90, 120 and 180 minutes.
  4. Highlight Auto Power Off and set it to Off. The default is 10 Minutes.

Auto Power Off is the sneaky one. It’s on out of the box and it turns the TV off after 10 minutes with no video or audio signal. If your streaming box, cable box or console dims its output or goes to sleep while you’re away from the screen, the TV can read that as “no signal” and shut down. Menu names shift a little between Vizio model years, so if you don’t see Timers in the main menu, look under System or Settings.

Check CEC if the TV switches off with another device

CEC is the HDMI feature that lets one remote control power and volume across devices. Vizio’s manual describes it as letting the remote handle power on/off, volume and mute for HDMI-connected gear. The flip side: when your PlayStation, Xbox, Roku, Fire TV or soundbar goes into standby, it can send the TV to standby too.

  1. Press Menu and open System.
  2. Select CEC.
  3. Set CEC to Disabled, then use the TV normally for a day or two.

If the shutoffs stop, CEC was the trigger. You can leave it off, or turn it back on and change the standby or “turn off TV” option in the other device’s own HDMI settings instead, so you keep one-remote control for volume.

Rule out remotes, cables and power

This is where the community fixes come in, and they’re worth doing before you assume the TV is broken.

  • Other remotes. Take the batteries out of any Fire TV Stick remote (or every remote in the room) for a day. In both iFixit threads, this was the fix people confirmed most often.
  • HDMI. If the problem only shows up on one input, move the device to another HDMI port and try a different cable. Several owners traced it to one dead port.
  • Power. Plug the TV directly into a wall outlet instead of a power strip or surge protector. One owner found a failing strip was cutting power in short bursts.
  • Heat. Vizio’s M-Series manual says to keep the vents on the back and bottom clear, avoid enclosed cabinets without airflow, and keep the TV at least three feet from heat sources like heaters or amplifiers. One iFixit poster only saw shutoffs on hot days and solved it with a fan.

Power cycle, update, then reset

If settings and hardware checks come up empty, refresh the software side in this order.

  1. Power cycle. Unplug the TV from the wall, give it a short while, then plug it back in. Newer Vizio menus also offer Menu > System > Reset & Admin > Soft Power Cycle, which turns the TV off and back on for you.
  2. Check for updates. Go to Menu > System > Check for Updates. The TV tells you if it’s already current.
  3. Try Quick Start Mode. Under Menu > System > Power Mode, switch from Eco Mode to Quick Start Mode. Vizio notes this raises standby power use (Eco Mode keeps it under 0.5 W); some owners report it ended their shutoffs.
  4. Factory reset. Menu > System > Reset & Admin > Reset to Factory Defaults, enter your PIN if you set one, then choose Reset.

Before you reset: it wipes every setting, including Wi-Fi and picture settings, signs you out of accounts and runs setup again from scratch.

When it’s probably the hardware

If the TV still shuts off with the timers off, CEC disabled, other remotes out of the room, a different outlet and a fresh reset, a failing power supply board or a worn component inside is the likely cause. An iFixit answer pointed at bulging or leaking capacitors on aging sets, which means board-level repair. That’s not a DIY job for most people: TVs hold charge inside even when unplugged. If your set is under warranty, go to Vizio support first; out of warranty, a local TV repair shop can tell you whether a board swap is worth it on your model.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Vizio TV turn off after 10 minutes?

That’s the Auto Power Off timer. It turns the TV off after 10 minutes without a video or audio signal; set Menu > Timers > Auto Power Off to Off to stop it.

Why does my Vizio TV turn off when I turn off my PS5 or Xbox?

CEC (HDMI device control) is passing the console’s standby command to the TV. Disable CEC under Menu > System > CEC, or turn off the matching power-link option in the console’s HDMI settings.

Why does my Vizio TV turn off and then back on by itself?

Owners on iFixit most often traced this to a Fire TV Stick remote sending stray power signals, a faulty HDMI port, or an unreliable power strip. Remove other remotes’ batteries and plug the TV into the wall to test.

Does a factory reset fix a Vizio TV that keeps shutting off?

Sometimes. Owners report it helping when the cause is a settings or software glitch, but it erases all settings and won’t fix a failing power board.

Can overheating make a Vizio TV shut off?

It can contribute. Vizio’s manual says to keep the back and bottom vents clear, avoid closed cabinets and keep the set at least three feet from heaters or amplifiers.
