The Resident Evil 4 remake has 16 chapters. Chapters 1 to 6 take place in the village, Chapters 7 to 12 in the castle, and Chapters 13 to 16 on the island. A first run usually takes somewhere between 12 and 22 hours, and the Separate Ways DLC adds seven shorter chapters played as Ada Wong.
That count applies to the 2023 remake from Capcom on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The 2005 original is structured differently, which is why some players are surprised by the number. The chapter breakdown below is spoiler-light: it names areas, not plot twists.
What players ask about RE4 Remake chapters
“How many chapters? Keep it spoiler-free.”
That’s close to how a player opened a Steam Community thread shortly after launch. The first guess in the replies was “14 or so”, which was wrong. The useful tip in that thread is where to check without spoilers: open the Challenges list in the game’s extras, since it has a challenge for clearing each chapter. The original poster confirmed there are 16.
“Can I go back to an area I missed?”
Often, no. In another Steam thread, a player hunting every treasure found the abandoned factory area closes off after Chapter 3, leaving two options: a second playthrough or replaying about 1.5 hours from an older save. The fix that player landed on is the one guide writers recommend too: make manual saves often, ideally one per chapter.
“Is the remake longer than the original?”
Yes, and the extra chapters are part of the reason. GameRevolution puts the remake at about 1.5 to 2 times the length of the 2005 game, with extended sequences and reworked boss fights spread over more chapters.
How many chapters in RE4 Remake, and where each one takes place
All 16 chapters fall into three areas. The per-chapter times below are estimates from The Loadout for a normal first playthrough, so expect yours to vary with difficulty and how much side content you do. The area split follows PowerPyx’s chapter-by-chapter walkthrough.
| Chapter | Area | Rough length | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Village | 60 to 80 min | One of the longer chapters |
| 2 | Village | 45 to 60 min | |
| 3 | Village | 40 to 55 min | Players report the abandoned factory closing after this chapter |
| 4 | Village | 50 to 65 min | |
| 5 | Village | 25 to 40 min | Last chance to explore the whole village |
| 6 | Village | 30 to 40 min | Smaller slice of the village; a bridge to the castle |
| 7 | Castle | 60 to 90 min | Arrival at the castle |
| 8 | Castle | 30 to 45 min | |
| 9 | Castle | 50 to 75 min | |
| 10 | Castle | 45 to 60 min | |
| 11 | Castle | 45 to 65 min | |
| 12 | Castle | 30 to 50 min | Ends with a major boss and the boat house |
| 13 | Island | 60 to 90 min | Start of the final area |
| 14 | Island | 80 to 100 min | Usually the longest chapter |
| 15 | Island | 50 to 70 min | |
| 16 | Island | 10 to 20 min | The finale; short |
A note if you’ve seen other lists: at least one widely shared guide puts the castle at Chapters 7 to 13. PowerPyx’s walkthroughs show Chapter 12 ending at the castle’s boat house and Chapter 13 taking place on the island, so 7 to 12 is the correct castle range.
Where the points of no return are
The big one is the end of the village. Destructoid flags Chapter 5 as the last chance to fully explore it: after the encounter at the villa, large parts of the village lock off. Chapter 6 still lets you into a smaller section, including the village square, and by Chapter 7 you’re at the castle with no way back.
So before you wrap up Chapter 5, finish the Merchant requests you can still reach and sweep up any treasure you know you skipped. Smaller areas close earlier too, as that factory complaint on Steam shows. Each area change (village to castle, castle to island) is a hard cutoff.
How long is each part of the game?
Add up The Loadout’s estimates and the village takes roughly 4 to 6 hours, the castle 4 to 6.5 hours, and the island 3 to 5 hours. Real-world totals spread wider than that:
- Twinfinite finished a first Standard run in about 14 hours, including most requests and treasures.
- GameRevolution’s thorough Standard run took around 22 hours.
- PowerPyx puts a 100% first playthrough on Assisted or Standard at about 12 to 15 hours, and a New Game Plus speedrun at 3 to 4 hours.
The gap mostly comes down to side content. The Merchant’s requests and treasure hunting can add hours on their own.
Is there a chapter select?
No. According to PowerPyx, there’s no chapter select and no free roam after the credits. That’s why manual saves matter: a save at the start of each chapter lets you go back for a missed trophy or treasure without replaying everything.
What you do get is New Game Plus, though it isn’t labelled that way. Load your cleared save to start again from Chapter 1. NME’s guide lists what carries over: weapons, items, upgrades, case size and charms. Treasures reset, and an S+ rank needs a fresh save.
Separate Ways chapters
Separate Ways, the Ada Wong story DLC, has seven chapters. GGRecon notes they’re much shorter than Leon’s and revisit the main game’s locations from Ada’s side. Expect about 4 to 5 hours if you do the Merchant contracts, or closer to 3 if you stick to the story.
It’s sold separately for $9.99 on Steam as of October 2026, and it’s included in the Gold Edition along with the Extra DLC Pack, according to the Resident Evil 4 Steam page. The Mercenaries mode is a free download.
How the original Resident Evil 4 was split
The 2005 game used a different system. GameRevolution describes it as five chapters, each broken into several sub-chapters, and players still refer to those parts by number, like “Chapter 4-3” or “Chapter 5-4” in Steam discussions for the 2005 version, with a Final Chapter at the very end. The remake dropped the sub-chapter numbering and simply counts 1 to 16, which is why “how many chapters are in RE4” gets different answers depending on which version people mean.
Frequently asked questions
Is Chapter 16 the last chapter of RE4 Remake?
Yes. Chapter 16 is the final chapter of Leon’s campaign in the Resident Evil 4 remake, and it is also the shortest, at roughly 10 to 20 minutes.
How many chapters does Separate Ways have?
Separate Ways, the Ada Wong DLC for the Resident Evil 4 remake, has seven chapters. They are much shorter than Leon’s, and the whole add-on takes about 4 to 5 hours.
Can you replay a single chapter in RE4 Remake?
Not from a menu. The remake has no chapter select, so keep a manual save at the start of each chapter if you want to go back to one later.
Is the remake longer than the original Resident Evil 4?
Yes. GameRevolution estimates the remake takes about 1.5 to 2 times longer to finish than the 2005 game, largely because several sequences were extended.
Does New Game Plus keep my chapter progress?
New Game Plus restarts the story at Chapter 1 but carries over your weapons, upgrades, case and charms. Treasures reset, and you can’t earn an S+ rank on a New Game Plus save.
