There is no butchering machine in Palworld. As of October 2026 (version 1.0), butchering is still a hands-on job: you craft the Meat Cleaver (available at level 12 for 2 Technology Points), put the Pal in your party, call it out, and pick Butcher from its command menu. The Pal dies permanently and drops the same loot it would drop in a fight, so it’s mainly useful for farming materials and for a second shot at an Alpha’s schematic.
Players have been asking for an automated version since early 2024, and the 1.0 release added a lot of base content, but nothing that processes Pals for you. If you’re looking for a quick way to clear a crowded Palbox, the best options are further down.
Is there a butchering machine in Palworld?
No. The Palworld Wiki page for the Meat Cleaver describes the cleaver as the only butchering tool and lists no structure that does the job, and the coverage of the 1.0 changelog mentions new Pals, the Sunreach islands, Awakening, Mutations and a base-building overhaul, with no butchering station among them. The official v1.0 release changelog on Steam is the place to check if you want to read every line yourself.
The idea of a machine comes straight from the community. In a Steam thread titled “Mass butcher pals”, a player proposed a water- or electricity-powered “meat grinder” that would take a batch of Pals and hand back their materials. Others liked it, though one reply argued the gore would be hard to fit in a game this cartoony. As recently as a December 2025 Steam post about a new passive skill, players were still describing an automated butcher as something they’d like to see, not something they had.
So if a video or forum post shows Pals being processed in bulk, it’s almost certainly a mod or a concept, not a vanilla feature.
How to butcher a Pal with the Meat Cleaver
You need the cleaver equipped and the Pal out of its sphere at your side. Here’s the order that works:
- Reach player level 12 and spend 2 Technology Points on the Meat Cleaver.
- Craft it at a Primitive Workbench with 5 Ingots, 20 Wood and 5 Stone.
- Move the Pal you want to butcher into your party from the Palbox.
- Select that Pal as your active Pal and call it out.
- Switch to the Meat Cleaver so it’s actually in your hands, not just in your weapon slots.
- Open the Pal command menu (the default key on PC is 4). The top option, normally Pet, now reads Butcher.
- Choose Butcher, then wait a few seconds for the drops to land before you go looking for them.
The cleaver itself has 300 durability and 25 attack per the wiki, so it doubles as a weak melee weapon in a pinch, but don’t count on it in a real fight.
Why the Butcher option doesn’t show up
Almost every “my cleaver doesn’t work” complaint comes down to one of two things: the Pal isn’t in your party, or the cleaver isn’t the item you’re holding.
A player who asked on Steam why only “Pet” appeared got the same answer from several people: Pals wandering around your base can’t be butchered. It has to be your current party Pal, summoned out. A later thread with the same problem added the second fix, which is that the cleaver must be selected and in hand. One reply in that thread also noted that in multiplayer the label can lag behind for a few seconds, so give it a moment before assuming something’s broken.
What butchering gives you, and how to get more
Butchering hands you the Pal’s normal drop pool, the same items you’d get by defeating it in the wild. That sounds dull until you think about Alphas. The wiki notes that a butchered Alpha rolls its drop pool again, which includes legendary schematics, so a captured Alpha is effectively a second lottery ticket.
| Way to boost drops | What it does | How solid is it? |
|---|---|---|
| Splatterina in your party | Its partner skill, Blade of Uncontrolled Passion, raises Meat Cleaver drops: +100% at base, up to +200% when fully condensed | Listed on the Palworld Wiki Splatterina page |
| Offal passive skill | Applied at the Surgery Table; the butchered Pal gives more Pal materials | Reported in a Steam post with no exact bonus given; treat as unconfirmed |
| Butchering an Alpha | Re-rolls the Alpha’s drop pool, schematics included | Listed on the Meat Cleaver page |
Splatterina is the dependable one. It’s a Dark Pal found at night in Scorched Hill and Frozen Coral Hill on Feybreak, and also inside Feybreak Cavern, per the wiki. You can also breed it.
Drops vanishing? Change where you butcher
Missing loot is the most common complaint about butchering, and it’s usually about location. In a long Steam thread on butchering drops, players described items appearing a few seconds late, landing in odd spots nearby, or dropping through the floor. The workarounds that came up more than once:
- Butcher outside your base’s boundary. Several people said butchering inside a base gave them nothing.
- If you have to stay inside, stand on an upper floor next to a wall so drops can’t slip under the terrain.
- Do it right after you call the Pal out. One player found that a Pal that had already started a work task or begun mining dropped nothing.
- Wait. Drops can fall from above and take several seconds to settle.
The other butchering thread adds one more trick: a tiny closed 1×1 room with a floor, walls and a roof, so nothing can scatter. The player who suggested it admitted they hadn’t tested it, so it’s worth a try rather than a guarantee. Most of these reports date from 2024, so some may be fixed in 1.0, but the “go outside your base” habit costs nothing.
Faster ways to clear out spare Pals
If your real goal is an emptier Palbox rather than materials, butchering is the slow route. When someone asked on Steam for anything faster than butchering, nearly every reply said the same thing: sell them.
- Sell to a Pal Merchant. They buy and sell Pals for Gold Coins. The wiki lists merchants at the Small Settlement, Marsh Island Church Ruins, Sea Breeze Archipelago, Forgotten Island, Duneshelter and Fisherman’s Point.
- Feed duplicates into the Pal Essence Condenser. It sacrifices Pals of the same species to rank up one of them, boosting its stats and partner skill. It becomes available at level 14 and needs Ancient Civilization Parts, per the Pal Essence Condenser page, and the wiki says 1.0 lowered condensation costs.
- Butcher only the ones worth it. Alphas for schematics, and Pals whose drops you need, ideally with Splatterina along.
One mistake to avoid with the condenser: sacrificed Pals don’t pass on their active or passive skills, so don’t throw in the copy that rolled the good passives.
Frequently asked questions
Can you butcher Pals that are working at your base?
Not directly. The Pal has to be in your party and called out with the Meat Cleaver in your hands, so move a base worker into your party through the Palbox first.
Does butchering a Pal kill it for good?
Yes. The Palworld Wiki warns that a butchered Pal is gone permanently, so check its passive skills before you swing.
Can you butcher humans in Palworld?
Yes. Captured humans can be butchered with the Meat Cleaver the same way as Pals, according to the Palworld Wiki.
Is it worth building the Meat Cleaver?
For most players, yes. It costs only 2 Technology Points at level 12 and is the only way to re-roll a captured Alpha’s drops, including its schematic chance.
Where is the fastest place to get rid of spare Pals?
A Pal Merchant. Selling a Pal is a single trade, while butchering means party swaps and waiting for drops to land. The wiki lists one at the Small Settlement, among other spots.
