Where to use the Dam Surveillance Key
Head for the Water Treatment area of Dam Battlegrounds and go into the Water Treatment Control building. The door sits in a back corner on the right-hand side once you’re past the entrance area. Guides describe the route slightly differently, but they all end up in the same corner:
- Enter Water Treatment Control. MetaForge’s quest guide goes in from the south side.
- Go past the reception area and take the door on your right. Mein-MMO says this leads into a dark room.
- Keep to the right through that room.
- Look for the locked door with a key panel in the corner. Prima Games sums the route up as two right turns from the main entrance.
- Use the panel with the key in your inventory. The door opens and the key disappears.
The wiki labels the room as being on the first floor. If you’re climbing stairs, you’ve probably gone too far; every route guide above has you reaching the door from the entry level.
One thing to check before you loot: Mein-MMO says a turret or camera often sits directly opposite the room, and it recommends destroying it first. That fits the key’s name, and it’s cheaper to deal with than to be shot at while you’re stuck in a doorway.

The quest is the reliable way. Random drops work too, but there’s no fixed spawn.
From the quest Greasing Her Palms
Celeste gives you the quest after you finish A Better Use. According to the wiki’s quest page, it hands you 2 Dam Surveillance Keys and asks you to visit three places:
- Dam Battlegrounds: the locked room in Water Treatment Control.
- Spaceport: the rocket thrusters outside the Rocket Assembly.
- Buried City: the barricaded area on floor 6 of the Space Travel Building.
Finishing it pays out a Lure Grenade Blueprint, 3 Speaker Components and 3 Electrical Components. MetaForge notes that just opening the door completes the Dam objective, so the second key is a spare in case the first run goes wrong.
From containers
Keys come from random searchable containers, so no single drawer is guaranteed. KeenGamer names Ruby Residence and Research and Administration as places it drops, and Prima suggests drawers, lockers and cabinets in Research and Administration and the nearby residential areas. Spend your Dam runs searching those, and pick up every key you find; one you don’t need today might be a quest item later.
What’s inside the surveillance room?
Expect a weapon and ammo stash rather than a jackpot. Prima lists a Weapon Crate and an Ammo Crate as fixed containers, plus red lockers and supply bags, and says blue-tier weapons and blueprints are common finds. Treat that as a good chance, not a promise: contents roll like any other container, and other guides only say the room holds “valuable gear” without naming items.
Whether it’s worth spending a spare key is a fair question. A Steam player in one thread said they had plenty of these keys and that the room has little good loot. If you only have one and Celeste’s quest is still open, save it for the quest.

Another Steam discussion with that title complained that the game never points you to the right door. Replies split: some said the item description and in-game map name the building, others pointed out that the description doesn’t say which door. For this key, the description names Water Treatment Control, and the corner room described above is the one you want.

A thread about keycard frustration covers a problem that hits every key: players report arriving to find the room already opened by someone holding the same key. Suggestions in the thread included going in with cheap gear and the key in your safe pocket, then heading straight for the door if you spawn nearby. That’s player experience, not something Embark has confirmed about matchmaking.
Tips before you spend the key
- Use the safe pocket. Both Prima and MetaForge stress this. A key in your normal inventory is lost if you go down before you reach the door.
- Close the door behind you. MetaForge’s guide recommends it so other Raiders can’t walk in on you while you loot.
- Expect company. Water Treatment is a busy part of the map. Clear the camera or turret opposite the door first.
- Plan your exit. MetaForge says two extraction points are close to the building, so you don’t need to cross the whole map with the loot.
