The quickest Solar Essence in Stardew Valley comes from Krobus in the Sewers, who sells 10 a day for 80g each, open every day at any hour. If you’d rather farm it, Ghosts on Mines floors 51 to 79 drop it 95% of the time, and Metal Heads (floors 80 to 119), Squid Kids, Mummies in Skull Cavern and Hot Heads in the Volcano are all reliable too. It sells for just 40g, so it’s worth more as a crafting ingredient than as cash.
Numbers here come from the Stardew Valley Wiki Solar Essence page and the individual monster pages, for version 1.6.15, the latest PC version listed in the wiki’s version history as of October 2026.
What players keep asking about Solar Essence
“How do I get a lot of it at once?”
That was the whole question in a Steam thread on farming solar essences, and the answers split two ways. Several people said just buy from Krobus daily, since it’s cheap and quick. Others pointed to Mummies in Skull Cavern, with one reply saying Mummies usually drop two or more each. The wiki backs that up: a Mummy has a 99% drop roll plus a second 15% roll.
“I’m bad at mining. Is there another way?”
A newer player on the official Stardew Valley forums asked exactly this while stuck on the Mr. Qi quest. The answers: Krobus once the Sewers are open, or a Sunfish Fish Pond at full size. Both are confirmed on the wiki, and both avoid combat entirely.
“Why do I never have enough for Mega Bombs?”
In a forum suggestion thread a player complained that 10 a day from Krobus can’t keep up with Mega Bomb crafting. Replies argued the drop sources are fine and the real limit is how many of those monsters spawn. The practical tips from that thread were to bomb groups of Mummies and to buy bombs elsewhere when your essence runs low.
Every Solar Essence source, compared
Ghosts and Mummies are the best farming targets; Haunted Skulls aren’t worth hunting for this. Drop chances are per kill, from each monster’s wiki page:
| Source | Where | Chance or amount |
|---|---|---|
| Krobus’ shop | The Sewers | 10 per day, 80g each |
| Ghost | The Mines, floors 51 to 79 | 95%, plus a second 10% roll |
| Mummy | Skull Cavern (tomb-style rooms) | 99%, plus a second 15% roll |
| Squid Kid | The Mines, floors 91 to 119 | 75% |
| Metal Head | The Mines, floors 80 to 119 | 65% |
| Hot Head | Volcano Dungeon, all floors | 65% |
| Iridium Bat | Skull Cavern, floor 51 and deeper | 50% |
| Haunted Skull | Quarry Mine, random Mines floors | 1.3% |
| Sunfish Fish Pond | Your farm | About 8% a day, only at 10 fish |
The wiki’s drop list also includes the dangerous variants of Metal Head and Squid Kid, plus the Blue Squid, so harder mine runs add a few more sources.
How to farm it efficiently
Your best route depends on how far you are. Early in the game, Krobus is a better deal than any mine run; later, Skull Cavern pays out in bulk.
- Open up Krobus. Donate 60 items to the Museum. Gunther brings you the Rusty Key the next morning, which opens the Sewers. Then buy 10 Solar Essence every time you pass by.
- Clear Mines floors 51 to 79 for Ghosts. At 95% per kill, every Ghost is close to a guaranteed drop.
- Keep going to 80 and beyond. Metal Heads and Squid Kids take over from Ghosts there. Squid Kids have only 1 HP, so one swing does it.
- Bomb Mummies in Skull Cavern. Knock a Mummy down, then set off a bomb while it’s a pile of bandages. The Mummy page says explosions deal 999 damage to downed Mummies, and normal hits don’t work on them in that state.
- Wear the Burglar’s Ring. It gives every item in a monster’s drop list two rolls, roughly doubling loot, per the wiki. Gil gives it after you kill 500 Dust Sprites, and Marlon sells it afterwards for 20,000g.
For a hands-off option, stock a Fish Pond with Sunfish. The Sunfish page says Solar Essence only shows up at a population of 10, at roughly an 8% daily chance, so one pond is a trickle. Getting the pond to 10 takes two quick quests (Acorns or Geodes, then an Amethyst or Mixed Seeds).
What Solar Essence is used for
Crafting eats most of it. Here’s what the wiki lists, so you know how much to save before you sell any:
| Recipe | Solar Essence needed | Other ingredients | Where the recipe comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glowstone Ring | 5 | 5 Iron Bars | Mining level 4 |
| Mega Bomb | 1 | 4 Gold Ore, 1 Void Essence | Mining level 8 |
| Iridium Band | 50 | 5 Iridium Bars, 50 Void Essence | Combat level 9 |
| Barrel Brazier | 1 | 50 Wood, 1 Coal | Carpenter’s Shop, 800g |
| Quality Bobber | 5 | 1 Copper Bar, 20 Sap | Willy’s Special Order “Juicy Bugs Wanted” |
| Mini-Obelisk | 20 | 30 Hardwood, 3 Gold Bars | Wizard’s Special Order “A Curious Substance” |
| Hyper Speed-Gro | 1 | 1 Radioactive Ore, 3 Bone Fragments | Mr. Qi, 30 Qi Gems |
The Iridium Band is the big one at 50 essence, so if it’s on your list, start stockpiling early. The rest of its uses are small:
- The Mysterious Qi, part 3: place one in the sand dragon’s mouth in the Calico Desert, per the Quests page. Finishing the chain gets you the Club Card.
- Community Center: it’s one of the options for the Adventurer’s Bundle in the Boiler Room.
- Fish Pond quests: some fish ask for 5 Solar Essence to raise capacity from 7 to 10.
- Tailoring and dyeing: it makes the Yoba Shirt at the sewing machine and counts as a yellow dye.
- Gifts: the Wizard loves it. Almost everyone else dislikes it.
Frequently asked questions
What is Solar Essence used for in Stardew Valley?
Mostly crafting: Glowstone Ring, Mega Bomb, Iridium Band, Barrel Brazier, Quality Bobber, Mini-Obelisk and Hyper Speed-Gro. It also covers part of The Mysterious Qi quest, an Adventurer’s Bundle slot and some Fish Pond requests.
Who likes Solar Essence as a gift?
Only the Wizard loves it. The Dwarf is neutral, and nearly every other villager dislikes it, so don’t hand it out as a general gift.
Do Carbon Ghosts in Skull Cavern drop Solar Essence?
Players on the official Stardew Valley forums say no; the Skull Cavern ghosts are Carbon Ghosts with a different drop list. Farm regular Ghosts on Mines floors 51 to 79 instead.
Should you sell Solar Essence?
Rarely. It sells for only 40g while Krobus charges 80g to buy it back, so keep a stack unless your chests are overflowing.
Where do I put Solar Essence for Mr. Qi?
In the mouth of the sand dragon skeleton in the Calico Desert. That’s part 3 of The Mysterious Qi, which ends with the Club Card for the casino.
