Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online have no crossplay or cross-progression. Here is who can play together, and how PC players on Steam, Epic and the Rockstar Launcher team up.

No, Red Dead Redemption 2 is not crossplay. Red Dead Online, the game’s multiplayer mode, only matches you with people on the same platform family: PlayStation with PlayStation, Xbox with Xbox, PC with PC. There’s no cross-progression either, so your online character can’t follow you from one platform to another. The one place it does mix is PC, where Steam, Epic Games Store and Rockstar Games Launcher players all share the same online world.

Who can actually play together?

Think of Red Dead Online as three separate player pools that never meet. Inside each pool, which store you bought from or which console generation you own doesn’t matter. Across pools, nothing connects.

You play on You can play with You can’t play with
PS4 or PS5 Other PS4 and PS5 players Xbox and PC
Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S Other Xbox One and Series X|S players PlayStation and PC
PC (Steam, Epic Games Store or Rockstar Games Launcher) Every PC player, whichever store they used PlayStation and Xbox

The console rows work because there’s no separate PS5 or Xbox Series X|S edition of the game. Ahead of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S launch, Rockstar confirmed that the PS4 and Xbox One versions run on the new consoles through backward compatibility, so a PS5 owner is running the same PS4 game as everyone else on PlayStation.

On PC, the store doesn’t split you up either. When the standalone version of Red Dead Online arrived on December 1, 2020, Rockstar’s Title Update 1.24 notes listed PC as one platform covering Steam, Epic and the Rockstar Games Launcher, next to PS4 and Xbox One. Steam’s own store data for RDR2 lists online co-op and online PvP but no cross-platform multiplayer.

Questions RDR2 players keep posting

“Can I play on PC with my friend on Xbox?”

This gets asked on the Steam forums every few months, and the answer never changes. In one Steam Community thread from February 2025, every reply said no, and one added that there isn’t crossplay between PlayStation and Xbox either. That matches everything Rockstar has published: no patch note or announcement has ever added cross-platform play to Red Dead Online.

“If I buy it from Rockstar instead of Steam, can I still play with my Steam friends?”

Yes. In a Steam discussion on exactly this, the answer was that the Steam, Epic and Rockstar Launcher versions all play together, but your friends list lives on Rockstar’s Social Club rather than on Steam or Epic. So add your friend through their Rockstar account, not just as a Steam friend. The original poster thanked them and moved on.

“My friend bought it on Epic. Are we stuck?”

No. A Steam thread from 2019 asked the same thing, and replies confirmed it works the way GTA Online does on PC. One player pointed out that the Steam copy is basically a shortcut that opens the Rockstar Games Launcher anyway, which is why the PC versions are interchangeable.

“Why doesn’t Rockstar just add crossplay?”

Rockstar has never said. On Steam, though, plenty of PC players say they don’t want it. One reply to a crossplay question argued console players are better off away from PC because “hackers have complete control” there. That’s a player’s opinion, not a Rockstar statement, but cheating in PC lobbies is the reason PC players give most often when the topic comes up.

Is there cross-progression or a save transfer?

No. Your Red Dead Online character, Gold Bars, cash and level stay on the platform where you made them, and story mode saves stay put too. Buying the game again on a different platform means starting over.

The only exception was a one-off. When Google shut down Stadia on January 18, 2023, Google’s FAQ listed Rockstar among the publishers that had shared plans for moving Stadia players’ progress elsewhere. That window is closed, and it was never offered to PlayStation, Xbox or PC players.

Is a PS5, Xbox Series X|S or Switch 2 version coming, and would it add crossplay?

As of October 2026, Rockstar hasn’t announced a native current-gen or Switch 2 version of Red Dead Redemption 2. Insider reports have kept the idea alive: a February 2026 report on RDR2.org quoted an industry insider saying an upgrade for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2 exists, while noting that nothing was confirmed by Rockstar or Take-Two and that the same source’s earlier timing predictions didn’t come true. None of those reports mention crossplay. Until Rockstar says otherwise, buy the platform your friends already play on.

How to play Red Dead Online with friends on the same platform

  1. Make sure you’re both on the same platform family from the table above. A PS5 and a PS4 work together; a PS5 and an Xbox Series X don’t.
  2. On PC, check that you both have Rockstar Games accounts and are friends on Rockstar’s Social Club. A Steam or Epic friendship on its own isn’t enough to find each other in the game.
  3. On console, add each other as friends on PlayStation Network or Xbox network and make sure both of you have the online subscription your console needs for multiplayer.
  4. Launch Red Dead Online (from the RDR2 main menu, or the standalone game if that’s what you own) and invite your friend from the in-game menu or join their session.

Owning the standalone version is fine. Rockstar’s standalone announcement pitched it at new players who don’t own Red Dead Redemption 2, and it puts you in the same online world as people who own the full game on that platform.

Frequently asked questions

Can PS4 and PS5 players play Red Dead Online together?

Yes. The PS5 runs the PS4 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 through backward compatibility, so both consoles share the same PlayStation player pool.

Can Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S play RDR2 online together?

Yes, for the same reason. Xbox Series X|S runs the Xbox One version, so it’s one Xbox player pool.

Is Red Dead Online crossplay between Steam and Epic?

Yes. All PC copies share one online world, whether they came from Steam, the Epic Games Store or the Rockstar Games Launcher. Add friends through Rockstar’s Social Club.

Can I transfer my Red Dead Online character from PS4 to PC?

No. There’s no cross-progression or character transfer between PlayStation, Xbox and PC. The only transfer Rockstar ever handled was for Stadia players before that service closed in January 2023.

Is RDR2 story mode co-op?

No. Story mode is single-player only. Multiplayer, including co-op missions with a posse, happens in Red Dead Online, which comes with the full game.
