Diamonds in Minecraft generate from Y 16 down to Y -64, and they get more common the deeper you go. The best level for diamonds is Y -58 or -59, just above the bedrock floor, which is where the Minecraft Wiki’s world data shows the most diamond ore. That applies to both Java and Bedrock Edition since the 1.18 Caves & Cliffs update, and still holds as of October 2026.
Old videos that say “Y 11” or “Y 12” are from before 1.18 and will send you to the wrong depth.
What level are diamonds in Minecraft today?
Below Y 16, with the richest band at the very bottom. According to the wiki’s ore table, diamond ore spans Y -64 to 16, is most often found at Y -59, and generates in every biome. Here’s how the depth breaks down:
| Y level | What to expect |
|---|---|
| 16 to 0 | Diamonds possible but scarce. Regular stone gives way to deepslate below Y 8. |
| 0 to -50 | All deepslate now, and diamonds become steadily more common. |
| -50 to -64 | The diamond zone. The wiki’s diamond tutorial puts the highest concentration from about Y -58 down. |
| -58 / -59 | Best single level to tunnel at. Deepslate diamond ore is most common at Y -58 and -59 per the Diamond Ore page. |
| Below -60 | You’re into the bedrock floor, which gets in the way of long tunnels. |
Java vs Bedrock
Both editions use the same range and the same peak. The one change worth knowing about came in 2023, when Mojang raised the amount of diamond ore below Y 0. Mojang’s feedback post about it said the change was in both the Java snapshot and the Bedrock Preview, with the goal of making deepslate mining more rewarding. The wiki lists it for Java as 1.20.2. So if you’re running any version from 2023 on, deep is the place to be.
How to find your Y level
- Java Edition: press F3 (or Fn + F3 on many laptops and Macs). Your position shows as XYZ on the left, and the middle number is Y.
- Bedrock Edition (Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, mobile, Windows): turn on Show Coordinates in the world settings. A small box with your position appears in the top left.
Both methods come from the wiki’s coordinates page. On a server where coordinates are hidden, remember that sea level is Y 63 and deepslate only appears below Y 8.
Why Y -59 beats caving higher up, and when it doesn’t
Strip mining at Y -59 is the safest bet for steady diamonds. Diamond generation punishes ore that touches open air: the wiki lists batches where half the ore, or all of it, is removed if it would sit next to an air block. That’s why open caves look picked clean. Ore buried in solid deepslate isn’t affected, so a fresh tunnel reveals diamonds a cave never shows you.
There’s a big exception. Exposure to water or lava doesn’t reduce generation, so diamonds show up more often on the walls of aquifers and lava lakes. Caves below Y -54 fill with lava, with its surface at Y -54 per the aquifer page. That’s why the diamond tutorial suggests caving at around Y -53: the lava sits just below you, easy to see, and the walls around it are worth checking.
Players actually asked for this. A 2021 suggestion on the Minecraft Feedback site argued diamonds should spawn more around deep lava pools and aquifers for a risk-and-reward feel. Current generation rules work roughly that way.
Best way to mine at diamond level
- Bring an iron pickaxe or better, plus spares. Anything weaker breaks diamond ore without a drop, per the Diamond Ore page.
- Dig down in a staircase rather than straight down, and keep a water bucket handy for lava.
- Stop at Y -58 or -59. The wiki tutorial calls -59 the best branch-mining level, right above bedrock.
- Dig a main tunnel two blocks high and one wide.
- Branch off to the sides. The branch mining tutorial says a spacing of about 6 blocks between branches gives the best diamonds per block mined; tighter spacing finds more of the small veins but costs a lot more digging.
- Mine diamonds with Fortune III if you have it. It averages 2.2 diamonds per ore and can drop up to 4. Save it for the ore itself, since deepslate is slow to mine (hardness 4.5 versus 3 for stone diamond ore).
A tip from the 2023 feedback thread: after the diamond boost, several players reported that caving became much faster than tunnelling, with diamonds now turning up in clusters of 1 to 3 where single blocks used to be. One commenter counted 27 visible diamonds in a single aquifer at Y -31. Results like that are luck, but they show water-filled caves are worth a look on your way down.
What players say about diamond hunting now
Opinions split. In Mojang’s diamond distribution thread, some players said the 2023 change made diamonds too easy, especially with Fortune, and worried it cheapened diamond gear and villager trading. Others welcomed it because strip mining through deepslate felt slow and tedious. Before the change, a June 2023 feedback post complained that mining at Y -58 yielded far fewer diamonds than before 1.18, summing it up as “mining for diamonds via actually mining is not fun.” Those numbers came from players’ own sessions, not official data, so treat them as experience rather than rules.
Other ways to get diamonds without mining
Chest loot is a real shortcut early on. The wiki’s Diamond page lists the odds per chest, including:
| Where | Diamonds | Chance per chest |
|---|---|---|
| Buried treasure | 1–2 | 53.1% |
| End city chest | 2–7 | 20.4% |
| Nether fortress chest | 1–3 | 17.9% |
| Village weaponsmith | 1–3 | 14.4% |
| Shipwreck treasure chest | 1 | 14.1% |
| Jungle pyramid chest | 1–3 | 12.7% |
| Village toolsmith | 1–3 | 9.9% |
Buried treasure is the standout, with better than coin-flip odds per chest. Diamonds themselves aren’t renewable, apart from trial chamber vaults, which can eject one.
Frequently asked questions
Is Y -64 or Y -59 better for diamonds?
Y -59 is better in practice. Diamonds peak around Y -58 and -59, and the wiki’s tutorial notes -59 sits right above bedrock, so you can tunnel without hitting the floor.
What level were diamonds before 1.18?
In 1.17.1 and earlier, diamonds generated near the bottom of the old world, most commonly between Y 5 and 12, with the richest concentrations starting at Y 11. That advice is outdated for current worlds.
Can you find diamonds above Y 16?
Not as ore. Diamond ore only generates from Y 16 down to Y -64, though diamonds can turn up in chests anywhere.
What pickaxe do you need to mine diamonds?
An iron pickaxe or better. Wooden, stone, copper and gold pickaxes break the ore without dropping a diamond.
Do diamonds spawn more in certain biomes?
No. Diamond ore generates in any Overworld biome, so pick the level, not the biome.
